  • Coffee Filters - Not just for

    • From: Lindsay
    • Description:

      1. Cover your dish with coffee filters when cooking in the microwave to prevent splatter.

      2. They are great for blotting greasy foods. Place a few on a plate and transfer your bacon, french fries, or any other greasy foods.

      3. Coffee filters are great for cleaning windows, mirrors or your eye glasses. They are lint-free so they don't leave streaks.

      4. Ball up a coffee filter and use it to apply shoe polish. Again, they work great because they are lint free.

      5. To stop the soil from leaking out of a plant pot, line the pot with a coffee filter to prevent the soil from going through the drainage holes.

  • Healthy foods for a $1 or less

    • From: Lindsay
    • Description:

I’m small, but I’m a big eater! I try to eat healthy snacks throughout the day and wanted to share some of my favorite healthy snack foods for a $1 or less per serving. Enjoy!!

      Apples

One extra large apple is about a buck and great for snacking or topping salads. They have fiber, vitamin C and potassium.

My favorite apples are Fuji… they are crisp and sweet and it’s rare when I don’t have at least one a day!

      Bananas

So cheap and my favorite portable snack because nature’s perfect wrapping. Like apples they contain fiber, vitamin C and potassium.

      Baby Carrots

A 16-oz bag is cheap and contains 6-8 servings. Carrots are great because they are low in calories and loaded with vitamin A.

I like snacking on them during the day and make them as a side with dinner. I make them the same way my mom used to - I boil the carrots and then coat them with butter, salt, pepper and dill. Yum!

      Oranges

Around $0.79 per lb. and they are loaded with vitamin C, fiber and potassium. They are a great portable snack like bananas because natures wrapping.

      Pears

A large pear will cost about 45 cents. They are a great snack because they will fill you up with about 7 grams of fiber.

      Eggs

Around $1.20 for 12 eggs, so that’s 10 cents per egg! I can eat an omelet for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Hard-boiled eggs are also great to keep in the fridge for a snack on the go.

      Yogurt

You can buy an 8-ounce container for less than a $1. I buy the low-fat kind, and get lots of protein and calcium and active cultures like bifidus.

      Canned Beans

I buy canned beans with low sodium. You can choose from canned green beans, garbanzo beans, kidney beans, black or white beans. They are all healthy and each can is only a $1 when on sale. I add them to my salads.

      Nuts

Some nuts like cashews and macadamias cost more, but peanuts and walnuts won’t burn a hole in your wallet, especially when bought in the shell. They fill you up and are great salad toppers.

  • Soup-up your dish soap

    • From: Lindsay
    • Description:

Increase the power of your dish soap by adding 2 Tbs. white vinegar to the bottle and shake. This helps cut grease so you don’t have to use as much and scrub less. FYI, your soap will not smell like vinegar!

  • Laundry Tip 1 - Stretch your s

    • From: Lindsay
    • Description:

There are so many choices for stain removal products, but if you want to save money and time searching for the right one, try mixing one part rubbing alcohol to two parts water. I put the ingredients in a squirt bottle, apply to the problem area, and then wait a couple minutes before starting the wash.

In spray bottle mix 3 tbs white vinegar, 2 tbs. liquid detergent and 4 cups warm water.  Shake and spray into stain, let stand for 5 min. and throw into wash.

  • The secret to cleaning your mi

    • From: Lindsay
    • Description:

For a cheap and easy way to clean your microwave there’s a simple solution! First, wet a dishrag, ring it out, and place in the center of the microwave. Leave it in there on high for 30-40 seconds. The steam that this creates will help loosen any leftover residue. Then, use the heated cloth to wipe the inside clean, but make sure you wait a few seconds before using the dishrag because it may be too hot to handle.

To freshen up and deodorize your microwave, place 3-4 slices of lemon in a bowl of water. Heat on high for 40 seconds. This is great if you like to nuke bacon like me or any other foods that leave a smell behind.

  • Make candles last longer

    • From: Lindsay
    • Description:

Your candles will last longer if placed in the freezer for at least 3 hours prior to burning.

Last Thanksgiving my family had those mini candles spread throughout a large dining table. One of them burned through and started a small fire on the tablecloth! If only we put them in the freezer first!!

  • Laundry Tip 3

    • From: Lindsay
    • Description:

      Homemade dryer sheets:

Pour 2 Tbs. fabric softener onto an old wash cloth and put in the dryer with all your clothes. This works just as good as dryer sheets, and a bottle of fabric softner could last around a year. For a less concentrated version, pour a 50/50 mixture of fabric softner and water into a spray bottle and wet clothes or washcloth 5-6 times before placing in the dryer.

  • Beauty Tip 1

    • From: Lindsay
    • Description:

      Beauty tip.JPGBeauty Tip 1:

We all know liquid foundation can get expensive. Try adding a couple drops of alcohol-free toner to the bottle and shake. My sister taught me this…it’s a great trick and you will get more out of the bottle and save time by toning your face while applying the foundation. I also mix it with moisturizer before applying to my face, which makes your look more natural and again, you will get more out of the little bottle.

  • Spice up your coffee!

    • From: Lindsay
    • Description:

You don't need to visit your local coffee shop or even buy expensive coffee to get a great cup. I buy the cheapest I can find at the grocery, but spice it up by adding cinnamon to the grounds before brewing. Add your favorite spice (I want to try cocoa next) and you will be surprised with the difference it makes...yum!!

-I add about 1/4 tsp. for 10 cups and lightly mix with the coffee grounds.
